About Us

Massive Grass has been bringing their unique alternative bluegrass sound to audiences throughout the southeast since 2007.  Hailing  from Wilmington, NC, the band features Ken Groce on upright bass, Adam Groce on banjo, Scottie Lynch on guitar, David Abeyta on mandolin, and their newest addition, Abigail Albaugh on fiddle.  All four original members grew up in the foothills of North Carolina, where bluegrass provided the soundtrack for much of their lives.  Cousins Adam and Ken Groce and Mr. Lynch got their start performing in rock and metal bands in the Wilmington area.  With the end of their band Clone Cycle, they decided it was time to go in a different direction and began immersing themselves in the bluegrass scene.  Long-time friend and fellow rock musician, Dave Abeyta, joined the band later that same year, bringing another powerful layer to their bluegrass sound with his mandolin playing.  In June of 2015, the guys were joined by Abigail Albaugh on fiddle.  Her classical violin background combined with her eclectic rock and bluegrass influences brought a precision and fullness to the group.  However, in the summer of 2017, Abby accepted a job teaching violin at a private school in Florida, and unfortunately had to leave the band.  The guys are currently plowing ahead with the original 4 members, while auditioning new fiddle players.  While Massive Grass is best known for their high energy, rock-influenced style of ‘grass and creative song-writing, they also showcase 3-part harmonies in their soulful ballads and waltzes.  Whether it is traditional bluegrass tunes, rock-to-bluegrass conversions, or their own original songs, Massive Grass mixes their rock-and-roll background with their love of acoustic mountain music to form a truly unique bluegrass experience.

Massive Grass has released a full length album titled 'Untethered', as well as a 5-song EP, 'Five Years'.  Both albums were recorded by Bert Carlin at Castle Lakes Studio in Castle Hayne, NC. 2017 saw the release of their second full-length album, Ripe For The Pickin.  This album showcases how much Massive Grass has grown as a band, and features a wide variety of song styles and well thought-out lyrics and vocal harmonies.  The albums are available on this website, as well as itunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and many other online music retailers.  Over the last few years the boys have expanded their travels, playing shows in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, and everywhere in between.  They have played some of the Port City's biggest stages including The Azalea Festival, Riverfest, Downtown Sundown, and Port City RibFest.  In 2015 they brought their high energy bluegrass to FloydFest in VA, winning new fans from all over the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions.  With every show, the Massive Grass family grows... Come out to a show, and you will see why their motto is 'Grass for the Masses'!
